Be a Legend to Your Kids

Does the world really need another blog? That’s the question I asked myself when I first had the idea for this website. There are countless blogs online covering an innumerable amount of topics all with varying degrees of usefulness to their readers.

One of the deep desires I have is to be a legendary dad. Not so that I can boast and say, “look how great I am” rather it’s so my kids get the best from me.  To be honest I’m far from it however I am passionate about improving in this area.

Our Role

The perceived role of a father has been seriously diminished over the last several decades. Yet regardless of what some say we play a pivotal part in the overall development of our children.  For our boys we provide a model and example of how they should interact with the world when they set out on their own. Whether we ask for it or not they idolize us.

The poem “The little chap who follows me” outlines this magnificently:

A careful man I want to be;
A little fellow follows me.
I do not dare to go astray
For fear he’ll go the self same way.

I cannot once escape his eyes,
Whatever he sees me do, he tries.
Like me he says he’s going to be;
The little chap who follows me.

He thinks that I’m so very fine,
Believes in every word of mine.
The base in me he must not see;
The little chap who follows me.

I must remember as I go
Through summer’s sun and winter’s snow,
I’m building for the years to be;
The little chap who follows me.

For our daughters we help them see the amazingly beautiful and God given gifts they are.  That they need not find their identity in the arms of any schmuck who comes along.  In fact the opposite would occur!  We will be the measuring stick against which they will compare all future suitors. They will quickly see through the pretenders because of the way we have treasured them over the years.

You were born for this

Make no mistake our role is important! That is why you need to “Be a legend, to raise a legend”. They deserve better than a dad who is self obsessed. They deserve better than a dad who puts no thought into how he is raising them. They deserve better than a dad who lets life simply happen. They deserve better than a dad who hasn’t prepared them for the real world. That better dad… that legendary dad… is you and I!

So join with me as I embark on an adventure of becoming a Legendary Dad!
